 Availability  goes a long way in determining the type of fish that you can eat regularly. For those that are resident in Western Nigeria, here is a list of common types of fish you can look for next time you visit the market.

HERRINGS (Popularly known as Shawa) it is very affordable to a large socio-economic segment of the society. However, the need to deal with plenty tiny bones of the fish can be discouraging. This Fish provides a great source of essential omega 3 fatty acid & vitamin D.

 

The fish called "PANLA" in Western Nigeria has different species most common are;

ALASKA POLLOCK                             WoRMS
ALASKA POLLOCK  mostly used for stock fish. Alaska Pollock is a high protein, low fat fish that provides heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids when served cooked.

HAKE  has a white flaky texture, It is quite a mild tasting fish . It has a soft, iron-grey skin and silvery belly. The flesh  is very soft when it is raw, but when cooked it becomes firm and meaty.

BLUE WHITING  Blue Whiting is a tasty white fish from the cod family. It is a rich source of protein and it contains vitamin B12 and selenium. Good for vegetable soups when smoked and dried.

ARGENTINA SILUS: (Ojuyobo) has big eyes, has scales and little to no fat content. The whole fish meals appeared nutritionally equal to good herring meal. The filleting scrap meals are lower in protein content but the nutritional values of the proteins are equivalent to that of herring.

MACKEREL ( Also known as Titus) is very sweet. It has a glossy skin, and one of the most expensive. It is an oily fish, mackerel has outer layers of red meat and lighter interior meat. The proportion of red meat and light meat varies with the species, as does the percentage of fat. However, all types of mackerel are higher-fat fish, rich in the healthful polyunsaturated fats known as long-chain omega-3s, which may help boost heart health.
It is also a good source of protein and B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12.  Mackerel offers tremendous amounts of selenium, a mineral that helps to protect our cells against damaging free radicals.

HORSE MACKEREL (Popularly known as Kote) rich in protein, fat, vitamins and mineral salts. It is a good source of protein, has vitamins B2, B3 and B12, rich in omega 3 fatty acids.



CROACKER: has different species, it is  mostly used for barbeque, it is expensive, has scales, it is tasty and delicious when grilled. 100 grams of Croaker fish contain 104 calories, 5% of the total daily needs.

CATFISH is a ray-finned fish with prominent barbels, which resembles a cat's whisker. Cat fish is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acid, high in protein, no carbohydrates, rich in B vitamins especially vitamin B-12 and an excellent source of phosphorous.
